I am all about beautiful flower combinations but then there are certain flowers that deserve their moment on the spot by themselves because they are so striking. And that is the case of the ‘Queen of the Night’ tulip. Now, I admit that not everyone will like this color but I find it so striking and sophisticated. And I enjoy a big vase of them without any other flowers or greenery.

The ‘Queen of Night’ tulip is single late heirloom tulip that was first introduced around 1940. This striking tulip is all about drama that last for a while. I find that this tulip has a long life both planted and in a vase, giving you more days to enjoy it compared to other tulips.

The tulip is not black but more like a deep chocolate purple, but when you see it in the sun, it looks like the petals are made of the most velvety black or that “twilight” color. This tulip is said to be the closest any of the Dutch hybridizers have ever come to black. I love it so much that next year I am planning on planting a garden bed of nothing but darker flowers, including the fully double sport, peony flowering tulip ‘Black Hero’.

I am really excited I started growing these again in my little garden and that this year the bunnies did not eat the bulbs. Thank you, Riley! You are the best garden security! 
